Yes, my tech did that but the problem was not a leak. We were out of propane. When that happens you get the odor as a warning!

One of the best ways I have found to check for leaks was to do a soapy bubble test. Just put soapy water on the gauge and if it makes bigger bubbles, then that's where you probably have the leak. One of the great preventative measures would be to get a good gas gauge that has an automatic shutoff for when there is a leak.
